Valfaris is a heavy metal infused 2D action-platformer and the next game from the team behind Unity Awards finalist, Slain: Back From Hell. The game is brought to you by publisher Big Sugar and developer Andrew Gilmour who now goes by the studio name Steel Mantis. Slain: Back from Hell was the first game by developer Andrew Gilmour and Valfaris definitely shares some elements from it.

Therion, a fearless and proud son of Valfaris, returns to his home to uncover the trutgam its doomed fate and to challenge the arcane evil at its very heart.
Valfaris already out and has rave reviews holding a 89/100 on metacritic at the time of writing this preview. You can pick up a copy of the game right now for either PC or The Switch.
The gameplay is set to a backdrop of space with a ominous metal soundtrack. Blasting and slicing through your enemies in a gory ballet, Valfaris appears to blends elements of 2d shooter platformer games like contra with some minor RPG elements. You use both guns and blades as weapons and you can increase your characters health or weapon damage as you progress thru the game. The environments look really well done and the gameplay looks very smooth.
Watching some gameplay I can see the merit of the meta score. The game is fairly fast paced where you're constantly pushing forward, dodging attacks by a myriad of different enemies and bosses. It appears that you move deeper, checkpoint by checkpoint and rarely go back to a zone.
